HIGHER EDUCATION.

MR W. H. JACKSON'S MOTION. CARRIED BY TRUST LANDS TRUST. Mr W. H. Jackson, at the monthly meeting of tho Masterton Trust Lands Trust last evening moved, in accordance with notice of motion given: "lhat thy sum of £IOO be set tutniv. as the neuclus of a fund to be utiiis-->d, when occasion may arise, to a,ssi<i the toL.iuuig. of an institution lor the advuntvuioiit ot higher <Hlui:atiou jn Alastercon."

Mr Jackson explained that his reason for taking this stop was that at some time or other, it would be necessary to provide a fund for some higher educational institution in what form ho could not say, and by doing as he proposed, when that linio arrived the Trust would be in a position to allocate a more or less substantial sum, without interfering with tho working of the Trust's fin-a-uces, and apart altogether from the usual annual grants. If this fund were established it might be a number of years before it would be called up, but when that time came, tho Trust could offer so much, and with the Government subsidy, any institution that might be decided, would be at a great advantage. This fund would also act as an inducement for such institution to be established. The allocated would be in the nature of a sinking fund, and would jiot put the Trust out of pocket, but would merelv lay themselves open to a liability of £IOO. - Mr R. Krahagen, in seconding the motion, said it seemed to him that this was. the only business method to adopt'in order to have the money available when the time is ripe to assist some form of higher education, whatever. that form might.be. Mr Caselberg," in \' supporting the motion, said it would mean something definite being done. If the Trust had a satisfactory year they could put aside £IOO or more if it was deemed advisable, and in a few year's time, when an institution came to be established, the Trust could offer a substantial amount. Mr Daniell said that provision had been made, as shown -in the annual report, for the allocating of money to aid higher education as well as primary. This money had been invested and there was now ar considerable sum available for this purpose. He hoped the Trustees would keep this is view, as it practically amounted to the same thing as the motion of Mr Jackson. Mr Jackson explained that the fund would have nothing to do with an annual grant. ' Mr Hogg thought the time was rapidly advaiooing when, on account of increasing population, greater ejfcicational facilities would be required. It the Trust could afford the money, it would be of great value if such a fund could be established. Mr Pragnell supported the motion because it .showed the earnest intention of the Trustees to do something to assist, tbe development of higher education. He considered it would be a good thing if an education com', mittee were set up to deal with'suchmatters. ' . Mr Miehell also-gave the motion his support, which, on being put to the meeting, was carried unanimously.
