BOROUGH WORKMEN.

A few weeks back the Masterton Boriiigh Council had before it an application for the increase of pay of its workmen to a minimum of 9s per day. We felt it our duty to strongly support the application, because we were convinced that married men with families could not live on less wages. The Council, however, which was probably guided by the opinion of the Mayor, rejected the application. Jn Palmerston North they have pursued a more humane course. 'Hie Mayor of that township (who happens to belong to the Reform Party) voluntarily .moved that the minimum rata of wages for ;il] labourers be Is per hour, and this was carried without dissent. Councillors generally agreed that !)s a day was little enough to pay any -nan under the present conditions of living. We venturo the opinion tint tho cost of living is just a-s high in Masterton as it is in Palmerston North. Tf Ds per day is little enough in Palmerston North, surtfly 8s 6d in Mastertoan is grosslv inadequate.
