CHILD CHARGED WITH MURDER. SAD STORY OF DRUNKENT CRUELTY. (Received Last Night, 8.30 o'clock.) SYDNEY, June 6. Kate Siely, fourteen years of age, lias been acquitted on th? charge of .murdering her father at Shell Harbour on March sth. The evidence disclosed a pathetic story of years of drunken ill-treat-ment, of the wife and family hy th? dend man. The, gun with which the fatal wound was inflicted went off while the girl was struggling to get the weapon from her father, after he had threatened to shoot the whole family.

At the inquest Mrs Siely gave evidence that deceased drank heavily. and systematieallv ill-treated her and her daughters. On' Saturday night he was so violent that they had to obtain police protection. On Sunday morning, after more drinking, he struck her and forced his daughters to give him money. He then got a knife and a gun, and threatened to murder the whole family. Kate was struggling to get the gun from him when it exploded and sliot her father in the head. Another witness, who visited the house shortly after the tragedy, said that Mrs Siely told him that Knt.> shot her father. ' Kate added: "Father was going to kill mother, and I did it to save her."
