DEFENCE OF PACIFIC.

CABLE NEWS

(United Press Association—-By Electric Telegraph — Copyright.)

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA SYDNEY PAPER'S VIEWS. (Received Juiu 5, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 5. Referring to the question of the Pacific, the Herald says: "If the recommendation Mr Allen brought back from his conference with the British Government is that New Zealand should create its own. uaval force iu the Pacific, we can assure him that there will be no attempt by Australia to obtain control of it. The adoption by New Zealand of a policy of maintaining its own ships, even if they be, in the first instance, only a flotilla of destroyers and submarines, is too important in. tha interests of both countries, and Canada and the Empire also, for Australians to jeopardise it by vain talk of Commonwealth firedommance of control. Doubtless, rom ordinary considerations of. prudence and business there must be cooperation, and probably close intimate co-6p3rat.ion, between New Zealand and Australian units. The Commonwealth will ■ certainly giye New Zealand every assistance in its power. If we enter into an arrangement regarding co-operation we shall enter as join in the scheme, all the more need for the closest co-opevation between Australia and New Zealand."
