THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS.

CABLE NEWS

(United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

HEAVY POLL EVERYWHERE.

POSITION STILL IN DOUBT.

RESULT OF THE REFERENDA

(Received Last Night, 8.5 o'clock.) SYDNEY, June 4.

As later returns arrive, it iB evident that the poll has been heavy everywhere. It is estimated, in round aiumbers, that the votes cast in the seventytwo contested electorates, up till tnisi morning, were about 200,000. ' ii lU ' .ioseuc voces uncounted rang ; from a few in some cases, to several thousand in others, such as Perth, so that even the number of electorates counted safe are not altogether out! of doubt. Whichever party wins, it is apparent that the margin, will be so narrow that the position of the new House will be unsatisfactory and precarious. THE REFERENDA. The referenda count is likely to cover several more days. The running, so far, is closer than was anticipated. The voting to date on the six questions submitted is as follows: Trade and Commerce.—"Yes," 457,229; "No," 486,713. , Corporations.—"Yes," 456,631; "No," 465,223. » industrial, -r- "Yes," . 458,879; '•'No " 475 250 Railways.—"Yes/'' 450,912; "No," 464,264. Trusts—"Yes," 460, 668: "No," 459,439. Monopolies. *— "Yes." 437,247; "No," 443,770.

A DEADLOCK PREDICTED. (Received Last Night, 11.50 o'clock.; . SYDNEY, June 4. The Hon. A. Fishar, Federal Prime ! Minister, and Mr Cook, leader of the Opposition, decline to express a definite opinion until the position is better defined. The Hon W. M. Hughes' predicts a deadlock. If, he says, the final returns giive the Liberals a majority, they cari pass no laws with which the Senate, which has an overwhelming Labour majority, does not agree and cannot even get supply voted. It is certain that responsible government in such circumstances would be impossible.

TWO DOUBTFUL SEATS

LIBERALS STILL LEADING

MAJORITY OF ONE PREDICTED

Received This Morning, 1'2.30 o'clock SYDNEY, June 4. The Illawarra and Ballarat seats are still see-sawing. In the former the Liberals pulled the Labour down to 119.

At Ballarat Labour is leading by eight votes. On present, figures and wjth the stipulation that absent vot?s may upset some calculations, the '"Herald" makes the position as follows: Liberals 38 Labour 35 • Doubtful 2 The Telegraph's summing up is:— Liberals 38 Labour 37

The balance of opinion seems to favour Labour winning both doubtful seats the final figures giving the Liberals a majority of one.
