CRITICS ANSWERED.
Speaking at Auckland yesterday, the Prime Minister defended his party against the splenetic and disingenuous attacks made upon it of late by the Opposition press. It has been a persistent cry that the graduated land tax introduced last session was a "sham and a delusion." Mr Massey has proved. by : figures that to those who have to pay the tax, the thing i s a grim reality. The increase in the land tax last year was n,d less than £81,500, and the Prime [-Minister assures Us that most of this - was duo to the operation of the griidui ated tax. Another charge levelled against the Government is that it < lias witifheld grants for workers' ' homes. , This, Mr Massey has also I proved to be utterly without founda- | tion. It is, of coarse, a proper funcI tion of the Opposition to criticise. Healthy criticism is a most desirable | tiling. But when newspaper | lings deliberately ant! persistently re--1 sort to misrepresentation, it is time I that the public itself showed its resentment.
