Dr Cleary, Bishop of Auckland, addressed a large meeting in the Opera House this evening.
At the conclusion, Mr Aitken, headmaster of Victoria Avenue . school, speaking as a Sunday school teacher of 40 years' experience, said there was no doubt religious instniction should be given in schools, as the ignorance of the Bible was lamentable; but he was opposed to school teachers imparting that in struction. He moved: "That as citizens and taxpayers of this Dominion, we pledge ourselves to oppose the scheme of the Bible-in-Schools League as conflicting with the rights of conscience and inimical to the real interests -of religion." The motion was earned.
