THE WAIHI MINE.
PROGRESS OF DEVELOPMENT WORKS. (By Telegraph. — Press Association.) WAIHI, Last Night. As considerable interest attaches to the development works at the bottom level of the Waihi mine, a reporter souglit an interview to-day with the superintendent (Mr Birtry). with regard to the matter. The first question put was in connection with the water in No. 4 shaft. "Probably," said Mr Barry, "the water tapped is connected with the reef system, and nntil No. 5 shaft, where the main pumping is done, is sunk to the required depth, and the natural .sets in, the water will remain in No. 4 shaft. The necessary sinking, etc., will occupy some months. Meanwhile, the development work at No. 10 level is progressing just as it was prior to the invasion of the water into No. 4 shaft. It makes not the slightest difference to the progress on the reefs at No. 10. The water has only stopped for the time beintg, the further sinking in No. 4 shaft. The nrincipa] work in hand at the No. 10 level is driving enst and west onthe Empire and Royal lodes respectivelv. The driving on a new reef at this level is also in progress." Referring to No. 2 shaft, Mr Barry said the shaft was "down to water level, and was as far as they intended sinking it. They were opening out -at No. 10 level at this shaft, with the intention of driving for the Edward lode, and the lode would be first intersected from this point. Referring to the installation of an electric power nlant at Horahora. and the progress of the transmission lines, Mr Barrv said thst the date of completion could not be determined.
