LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
In the course of his reply to a deputation at Pongaroa yesterday, the Minister of Public Works made it clear that the Government, intends bringing down a comprehensive Local Government Bill at as early a date as possible. The Hon Mr Eraser declined to give details of the measure, but said it would not affect his own Department alone, but every Department of State. From this remark it may be taken for granted that the whole system of local government will shortly be in the melting pot. Most people will agree that it is not .hefore time. The system of local government is costing the country altogether too much. In many respects it is obsolete and over-lapping, and the country is not deriving those advantages from it that it has a right to expect. Th.9 Government can hardly be expected, to deal comprehensively with the subject in the coming session, it can, however, pfece a scheme of reform bafore the country which might be licked into shape, by the local authorities.
