Mrs R. J. Seddon has been spending a. few days in Featherston. Mrs Seddon was a great friend of the late Mrs J. W. Card, who died a few days ago at. .Featherston. A telergam from Dannevnrke records the death of Mr John Astill, of Sydney Street, Wellington, a retired butcher, seventy-eight years of age, w3io wAs 011 a visit to relatives there. Death, which occurred suddenly. on Monday morning, was due to heart disease. A wedding creating unusual interest amongst tlie Natives of the Wairarapa took place At Major Brown's (Tuhuiarangi) residence on Monday, when his grand-niece, Kere Te Whaiti, daughter of Tutu Te Whati, was married to Rnngi Rooihai. of WaL pawa, Hawke's Bay. The Rev. H. T. Parata officiated. Mrs Savage, from Nelson, is at present on a visit to 3ier son, Mr F. S. Savage, of Carterton. She is accompanied by her niece. A Wellington message states that the Prime Minister has accepted an invitation to be present at one of the functions to be held in Christehurch in honour of Captain Halsey and the officers of H.M.S. New Zealand. Mr Massey leaves for Christehurch on Friday evening, returning probably on Sunday. A Wellington message states that Archbishop Redwood has received an official cablegrom from Rome announcing the appointment of Dean O'Shea, S.M., Vicar-Genernl of this Arch Diocese, as co-adjutor to the Archbishop of Wellington, with right of succession.

Sir James Carroll continues to make satisfactory progress towards recovery from iiig recent illness, but will not be able to see visitors for another week or two. A Hastings telegram states that Mr James Garnett, Mayor of + hat town, died on Tuesday night. The deceased, who was 57 years of age, underwent an operation for appendicitis three weeks ago. Ho was a member of a number of local bodies, and was elected Mayor in 191.1, and was returned unopposed for two successive terms. He leaves a widow and five sons.
