ORGAN RECITAL.

BY ME C. SPENCER OOMPTON

The largo number of people who were present at St. Matthew's Church, Master ton, last evening, must have come away highly satisfied with the splendid musical treat given by Mr C. Spencer Compton, whose ability as organist is of the first grade. The opening overture Rossini's "Semiramide," was render, ed in brilliant style, the soft rythmic effects pleasing greatly. "L'Angelus," Godard's beautiful melody, was played with charming effect, and gave a fine exampl%of the organist's artistic touch. A .stirring number was given in Schubert's "Marche Militaire," while "The Question" and "The Answer," by Wolsterholme. were beautiful themes, delightfully rendered. Schubert's lovely piece, '"Serenade," created a most favourable impression, and played by Mr Compton was an established favourite. "A Day in Venice" (a) Gondolieri, (b) Buona Notte, was a oharmingly beautiful number. Handel's great work, "Hailstone Chorus," was a bofitting conclusion to an excellent programme of artistic music. During the evening Mrs H. J. Francis sang, "0, Divine Redeemer" with good effect, and in company with Mr H. F. Green sang the duet. "My Song shall always be Thy Mercy." Mr Green also sang Stainer's "King Ever Glorious." Gounod's anthem "Send out Thy Light," by St. Matthew's choir, was a much enjoyed item. Mr Compton deserves the highest praise for the programme lie arranged, These recitals have become deservedly popular, and the large attendance testified to the general appreciation.
