ANNUAL MEETING
Tlie Annual Meeting of tlxe Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held on Sa/turday in the Dominion Hall, Ma.starton. Mr J. B. MoKenzie occupied the cliair, and over thirty members were present. The result of the annual election of officers was announced, and it was intimated that iMr Georgeson had been elected to succeed Mr J. B. MoKenzie as President for the current year, j Messrs Hausnann and Sykes, M.P., J congratulated mem bed's on the position of the Society and the progress made, Mr 'Sykes stating that as Treasurer during the last three years his; duties, tfliaiiks to the Secretary had been exceedingly light, The President's report for the year ending 31st. March, together with the Balance Sheet, were submitted. In moving their adoption the President -mule feeling reference to the. late President of tfte Society (Mr Paul ing), wluxvo deailh, he considered, had bwn a loss to the Society, the community and his maaiy personal friends, and the Society had! done its duty in erecting a memorial to his memory. Sir Walter Buchanan had generously presented a uniform to the Pipe Band and Mr John Hessey had given them a shield. Messrs. R. Mcßae and Sutherland had established a class for Highland dancing wliicih had been attended by about sixty pupils. They bad lost 69 members tlirough withdrawals during the year, but they had gained 274, leaving a net gain of 200. Mr Pearson, as piper major, had rendered invaluable assistJ T.ce. making no fewer than eighteen trips from Carterton la.st winter. After an existence of thirty-seven years, the Society had readied manhood, and Carter■ton having been invited to join them had respoonded heartily. In ronclusion, he could, not "too warmly express his'appreciation of tihe services of the Secretary (Mr .Gillespie), whose devotion to the interests, of the Society and indefatigable zeal had so largely contributed to its success, (applause.) Mir Georgeson .seconded ithe motion ; and in doing so complimented Mr MoKenzie on hia excellent services as President, and bis loyalty and enthusiasm as >a Caledonian, i The motion having been carried Mr MoKenzie vacated the cliair. and Mr Georgeson as President-elect, was duly installed in his petition; — In taking the chair Mr Georgeson thanked the members for electing him a-s President. This was no mean honor, and he had a keen sense of the responsibilities attached to tlie office. Although only a young Caledonian, he had done what he could in promoting the best interests of the Society. As President, he would' make no promises, but he would carry out the duties he had to perform judiciously and in a business-like way. They had passed through an eventful year. Their receipts wei'e a record, and so also wa« tlie expenditure. They had received a. good accession of members from Carterton, an<l that branch was now represented 'by three directors. It was intended to have an ingleside at Gladstone to welcome Sir Waliter Buchanan on his return, a compliment that he richly deserved, because of what .he liad • done for the Pipe band. The band had _ been of great assistance to their Society, and it was hoped that arrangements would be made to enable the pipers to take part in the Pipe Band Competition thaiti is to take place at the Auckland Exhibition. He thanked Messrs Mcßae and Sutherland for the assistance they had rendered, in the way of popularising ' Scotdh dancing. Tlie Society had 624 members, and they had reason to l>e proud of the position it had attained. —(Applause.) Votes of thanks to the retiring President and the various office bearers, and a special vote of thanks to Miss Gillespie for the assistance silie had rendered tlie ladies taking part in the Society's Ingleside s and socials, concluded the meeting.
