Tilt* Ashburton County Racing j Club's Autumn meeting concluded j yesterday, nnd was a great success. I 'Hi,* I'.umont racing Club's meeting j tak.'S p'.aci> on Wednesday and Thury-J day n.-.vt. Tiie acceptances are sati.vfac'ory, and a good meeting is as-1 surcd. 'llia Otaki Maori Racing Club has ■received very satisfactory nominations far its Winter meeting, and everything points' to a, successful fixture. ,T. Phillips*, the Lansdowne trainer, has boen laid tip for same time with a bad illness. He is now recovering, tod his many ifnends wish for him a speedy recover. •Handicap for the , Wanganui 3toeplecha.se and Century Hurdles are due to-night. Sir Solo is enjoying a spell. His shoes have been taken and during the day he is allow to run at large in the paddock. Sir Solo's owner has not yet decided whether .o give the Sir I«addo horse, a special preparation for the New. Zealand Cup. •-'■'•;'-.•,- : Con/aska, in the same.stable, is" going; on- the right wav, and will "bo raced at *om>e of: the winter' meetings.' i JUj-ctq, in J - .' Phillip's stable., is not td"t>e raced* d\ifirig ; the winter/ .and will "be kepk in-Vier of early spring racing. The Sir .Laddo mare has thrown off all signs* 'of* soreness. The two-year-old, Veritas, hy^j? levation —Braveheart, won £lso in stakes during tho, past season.. 0. Price's .application to have the remainder of his disqualification removed, was declined by the Canterbury Jockey Olub. Price was disqualified on August loth, a period of twelve months, so that his tinvi is not up for over three months. Many considered that Price was harshly dealt with at the time of his disqualification, and his return to the "pigskin*"' would he welcomed bysportsmen -generally. "My, sympathies are all with betting men", because the Magistrates hustle them and the public cheat them,'' 'remarked Judge Smith at the; West Bromwick County Court, England, recently, when a defendant, who described himself as a bookmaker, appeared jon a judgment summons. He applied for an adjournment, pleading that he was root" in a position to pay, but when the flat season commenced lie hoped to be; able to do so. His Honor adjourned the case, making the above FirsC Glance, a winner at Ashburton, is said to be one of the fastest gallopers in training in the South Island. The steeplechaser Mt Cook figures amongst -the acceptances at Egmont. It would seem thau this good jumpeif is still standing .up, and will no doubt figure amongst the lepping brigade this season. Mt Cook's last staart was in the Napier Park Steeplechase, when he showed good form. That useful horse Mulga Bill will make his reappearance at Egmont alter a good spell. teilrain, who was in the boom some time ago, has accepted in the Waihi Handicap at Egmont, so is apparently all right again. ■ "hr winning the Ashbttrtoh Cup (H .miles), is another instance of a horse being considered a sprinter and come out and win over a distance. "Glenfinnan was well fancied for the race in question. Oxenhope is .proving a good investment" for his new owner, wiho is aiready talking of Stewards Handicaps with the chestnut son of Obligado. B. Deeley is dead after the -jockey championship. His wins at Asliburton put him on a level with. Emerson. The Auckland crack is now favourite. '

It comes as something of a surprise to know that the "Pahiatua Club made a profit over their nontotalisator venture. New Zealand cast-offs keep on, winning in Australia. Mundic is the latest animal to maintain the honour of this Dominion. Anything-seems able to win in the Commonwealth. Poor old Lord Soult! It is about time this once-brilliant, sprinter was pensioned. They can't go on for ever, as some owners seem to think. Mr W, iMcßeth, an old resident of Kiwitea, and recently "of St. John's Hill, Wanganui, died at the, Wanganui Hospital on Saturday last. Tho deceased was widely known. He was the owner of that fast mare Crucinella which won the Feilding Cup and other important events about three years ago. He also owned Alure and Handsome Mai3. He took Oucinella to Australia after her win at Feilding, and while there was attacked by an illness. Lately lie became so* seriously ill that he was forced to enter the Wanganui Hospital. He was a true sportsman and the district has lost one of its best settlers.
