HIGHER EDUCATION.
MR W. H. JACKSON'S PROPOSAL
At tlie meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust last evening, Mr ,W. H. Jackson movea, in accordance with notice given:—■
"That the sum of one hundred pounds be placed on the estimates this year, ; and every subsequent year, until the present overdraw is paid off, and yearly afterwards such larger sum as the Trustees may see fit to vo'*\ and that this fund be made* avallable for the general equipment of such institution as may be established in the Mas-V-rton Small Farm Area, or the borough of Masterton, for higher education,"
In submitting the resolution, Mr Jackson stated that his i*6a.a>ns' for moving were: (1) mat 'something practical may bo cone in the matt:: of assisting highi r education. The Trustees have already unanimously resolved that they must, and will as» sist higher education. The resolution armed at creating a fund fev this purpos?. (2m Without tho crea , tion of such a fund it would be impossible fpr tlu ; Trustees, out of the ordinary revenue of any one year; to make an adequate grant for equip ment purposes. (3) That other'educational interests may not be made to suffer whoa the time arrived'for j the Trust to offer liberal assistance to whatever institution may be established for high.r education. (4) It was only a few years ago that tl: exigencies of the Trust's finanese resulted in the reduction of all prim- ' ary school grants to ono half th. usual amount for the year. The resolution aimed at preventing such ■ course having to oe resorted to ir, the future. 'Mr Jackson said ha was quit? willing, if the Trustees' thought fit,, to hold the resolution over until after the coming election; The Chairman uiought that, as the'' matter was of considerable im,port«ncey it? snould hyii eld over in the meantime.
