ST JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE

■REPORT OX NIJRSL\G DTVISTOX

Tho annual report of the Masterton Xursing Division of tho St. John Ambulance BrigacL, read before the annual meeting o.i ~\\ eduosday night, was as follows: - J have the lionour to submit the fifth annual report. During t: 1 is* yoar. 1912, Dr HJen Cowio delivered a most interesting oours-e of le< uuvs on "Home Nursing" and 12 practiceswere hold, and verv well attend, d.

The Division' has adopted the regulatiun uniform, and is in a good iinaneial position. Seven eortiiicat,il new members wore en; oiled last session, and we are hoping to further increase cur membership this year. The change of officers caused through the unavoidable resignations oj' MU.'h Tankcrsley and Mrs Manuel! resulted in Miss Eva AVallis being promoted first nursing officer and Miss Elsie Campbell inspector or stores. These appointments are very popular, both ladies, being efficient and enthusiastic members. The annual inspection was held on the oth September by the assistantcommissioner (Mr H. H. Seed"'. Mr Seed was well pleased with tho general efficiency of the Envision, and he strongly recommended that one or more squads be- sent to' Wellington for the annual First Aid and Nursing Competition. The Division wa-s a-sked and gave a demonstration to the Masterton branch of the Girls' Friendly Society. The Rev. Williams, in moving a vote of thanks to the Division, month tied the great good ine St. John Ambulance Brigade was doing .all over th * world, and that benefit must result to any community where there is a branch of the brigade. During th? year mrmbci's of this Division made their first appearance on ''public duty" at the Sol way Show Grounds. With such crowds as attend the show accidents are boiK.d to occur, though fortunately on this occasion there were only two minor injuries to attend to. Superintendent Lewis, of the Men's Division, was in charge, and ttuid© all the roeeessary arrangements in connection with the ambulance tent. Our "occurrence resistor" shows that members are seldom called upon to render first-aid. and in this respect oiir district is singularly fortunate. There is always the satisfaction, .However, that should occasion require, our members are ready and willing to act whenever any accidents happen. Through the generosity of the public of Masterton we were able from the Ambulance Saturday collections to reduce the fees for the First-Aid and HomeNursing Classes) and also to provide the neqessary equipment for firstaid aad relief work.

Sine? the .formation cf this Division the following certificates have been awarded to members: First-aid certificates 4, home-nursing certificates 20. medallions 14, medallion labels 7. During the same time IK women have attended the first-aM lecturea and 92 attended the homonursing and invalid-cooking lectures. It is somewhat disappointing that such a small percentage came forward for the annual examinations. Whilst th> attendances at lectures and practises must have a beneficial effect" educationally, still, it would be much more satisfactory if all qualified to do so would submit themselves te th: annual examination, wbich is 1 always fruitful of much useful knowledge aid experience. By doing sc the authorities at St. John's Gate can form a. better idea of th? work being done in the district by the branch, as a record is ke>pt of the certificates granted. 1 desire on behalf of the Division to tender to Mr Alex. Donald our high appreciation of the valuable assistance he- has always m willingly given us, and also to thank lr.m for again auditing our accounts. Tho thanks of the Division" are also due to Mrs W. H. Cruic.ksha.nks and Mr IST. E. Jackson for donations to our funds. In conclusion I desire to express my grateful thanks to the members of the Division for the very efficient manner in which they have carried out their duties, amd the able assistance rendered at all times. Trusting that the incoming year may be one of continued progress. HELEN GTLLESPTE. Lady Superintendent.
