SPORT AND PUBLIC DUTY.

The remarks made by the Mayor of Auckland a .few days ago, to the c-f feet that the young men of this Dominion are devoting too much attention to tho various forms of sport. and too little to civic responsibilities, may be applied with equal force to every township in o.\ew Zealand. Tho growing tendency is to sacrifice home, education, literature, and every responsibility of citizenship upon the altar of sport and amusement. The day is coming when we shall require to call a halt. Young men will have to face the responsibilities of life iu grim earnestness. Physical prowess, useful though it be, will have to give way to mental culture and those higher attainments tliat are necessary to preserve the nation fixun decay. Compulsory training is the first step in the direction of impressing upon tJie youth of the country the obligations of citizenship. The defence of the country against foreign aggression is, however, of insignificant importance compared with the defence of our own people against mental degeneracy.
