MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The first monthly meeting, of the new Mast-wton Borougih Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening, there being present—Hi<Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Cora dine) and Councillors H. J. O'Leary. G. W. Sellar, F. W. Temple, E. Flanagan, W. Candy, W. it. Kemball, J C. Ewington, a. E. Wiinzenberg ant B. J. King. The Mayor and Councillors ■-beings duly sworn in, Cr Temple said that a!' present would be gratified at seeing the Mayor restored to health, and he was sure Councillors would join in congratulating His ..orship on bein;:; returned again &o o.ie position of firs" citizen of Masterton. He hop>ed thaihe would enjoy good health to enable him to carry out the important duties attached to the office of Mayor. Or behalf of the old Councillors he »voulclike to thank His Worship for the help ho had given to them during the past two years. He hoped, and felt sure, that the new Council would work with the same harmony as existed in the Council Chamber during the past. His Worship thanked Cr Temple for his remark's, and also thanked the citizens for returning him, for the sixth time, to the Mayor's chair. He appreciated the honour conferred upon him very much, and felt highly gratified at being returned unopposed —an honour which lie was duly proud of. In welcoming I the Councillors he would like to thank those Councillors who had assisted him in the passt, and ihe was glad to see several of them round the \ table again. He extended a very hearty welcome to the new Councillors, and said he was always pleased to see young men coming forward and offering their services in tlie interests of the general community. He was sure that the time given to the work of the Borough Avould well repay them, as the education received,in discussing matters of public interest tended to broaden one's views. This was the first occasion during his term as Mayor that four new Councillors were elected to the Council at one time. He had no doubt that the new Council would work for the general good, with die same harmony as had existed in past councils. Crs Sellar, Winxenberg, King and Kemball thanked the Mayor for his welcome, and said it would be their continuous endeavour to work in the very best interest's of the Borough. The Secretary ,' of the Wairarapa Hospital aud Charitable Aid Board forwarded a statement showing that the Borough contributions to the Board for the ensuing year amounted to £564 lis 4d,"payable in quarterly instalments of £9l 2s 10s. The Mayor said « was a matter for congratulation that this year's contribution was £124 less than last year. The monthly reports of the Borough Engineer, Manager of the Abattoirs, Libra nan and Poundkeeper were read and adopted.
