MR ASQUITH OPPOSES THE . MEASURE. (Rceived Last Nignt, 11.35 o'clock.) LONDON, May 7., The House of Commons was crowded during the debate on the Women's Representation Ball. The debate was characterised by a conflict between the paa*ty friends of both sides. The Right Hon H. H. Asquith, Prime Minister, declared that th' 3 social structure t would not be strengthened by granting women the vote. He regretted the difference of opinion with his colleagues. If they had hiinted at a change of leadership he was prepared to resign, but that hint was not given. Sir Edward Groy emphasised Mr Asquith's fairness to his colleagues, who favoured the Suffragette Bill, and the supporters of the Suffragettes. There was reason to deplore the unconsidered criminal conduct of the militant few. Sir Edward Gry, the Right Hons. D. A .Birrell, Svdney Buxton, W. Ruiuciman, and F. 0. Acland voted for the Bill, and the Right Hons. Asquith, R. McKenna, Lewis Harcourt and Colonel Seely against the Bill. The majority of the Nationalist.;' opposed the Bill, while a number ab stained from voting on both sides. There were twenty-two pairs.
