FREE LABOUR ENCAGED AT.. TIMARU. 4 • PROMINENT BUSINESS MEN TAKE OFF THEIR COATS. (Bit Telegraph.—Press Association.) TIMARU, Last Night.
Work is proceeding at Smithfiela to-day, with a good number of killers. There are many applicants, but some selection according to skill is necessary. At Pareora some of the free faei., knocked off in sympathy with the Unionists. No difficulty is anticipated in getting free men. The steamer Zealandic came in yesterday to load 30,000 carcases of tallow, etc., but the" watersiders would not turn to. In the afternoon they said they were waiting instructions from tht headquarters of the Federation, the, same reply being given this morning. The ship's agents gave them til noon to make up their minds. The Union not being pmpared to answer at noon, free labour was called for. There were plenty of applicants to form a. gang, some prominent busiaoss people tair.ng off their coats to set an example. Those in authority state that for inexperienced men they got through the afternoon's work with creditable expedition. In loading cased goods and carca® *s, pass'.ng the latter into the hold, and stowing, . very good time per truck was recorded.
