"THK BUTTERFLIES." Alter successfully touring England for several years, and South Africa for ten months, the management of tin l English Costume Comedy Company, "The Butterflies," decided to extend their operations to New Zealand and Australia. This talented organisation will open a. season at the Toini Ha IT, Masterton, on Monday evening, May 12th, "The Butterflies" are a combination of three ladies and four gentlemen, each of whom have, gamed first class rejmtatior.s at the principal theatres and nut-sic hail.v of London and the English provinces. They are Miss Ada Smart, operat:e vocalist, Miss Marion Ai'inituge, the comedy girl; Miss Cecilia. Gold, 'burlesque actress; Mr Jack Waller, comedian and violinist; Mr Wylio Watson, 'cellist and light comedian;' Mr Robert Fostor-PTine, character baritone; and Mr Fred Bennett, solo pianist from the Vienna Conservatoire. lCvery member of the company can play a, variety of instruments, sing,' dance, act in opera, :v>medy and farce, and in addition to a vaudeville programme, will each evening render a condensed version of one of the following operas : "Rip Van Winkle," " La, Poixpee," "Les Martvuis Atnoureux," "Les Cloches de Comevill'e," and their famous burlesque on "The Blue Hungarian Band." The tour of the Dominion is limited to five months, as "The Butterflies" have an engagement to fulfil in Australia. The company eonclri.de-> a seven weeks' season in Auckland this week, and then come direct to Ma.'-tei'ton. The New Zealand Herald, in its notice of the last change of programme, said :—"The popularity of 'The Butterflies' shows no sign of waning. Their excellent and varied entertainment, as presented last night in His Majesty's Theatre, was well patronised, and proved to be distinctly to the liking of the audience, who were loud and insistent in their applause and their encores. The fund of humour provided by Miss Marion Armiitage and Mr Jack Waller is of the cleanest and the brightest, and provoked 'match laughter. Songs of the more serious type are admirably rendered by Miss Ada Smart and Mr Foster-Hine. The musical portion of the programme is of great excellence. Besides Mr Jack Waller on the violin and Mr Wvlie Watson on the 'cello, Mr Fred Dennett fairly electrified his audience by his playing of Liszt's Rhapsodie (No. 14) on the piano. Great applause greeted his performance, and he wias forced to respond to (several encores. The ever popular Hungarian Band and other favourite items were given by the company. They also presented the miser scene from ■ ' 'Les Cloches de Corneville," and made a marked success of it. Their efforts were worthy of an experienced operatic company, the acrting of Mr Jack Waller as the miser being remarkably realistic. The whole scene, with its enchanting music and diverting humour, is quite •the best item in The Butterflies' repertoire, and is one of the best items ever seen on the Auckland stage." The box plan will be opened at the Dresden on Thursday morning. BELLE ORiOME 00.
