THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURES'. "THE POWER OF SILENCE." To-night, at tihe popular T.P, Electrio Theatre, patrons will be presented with an excellent change of programme, as two big feature dramas are included in the .series. "The Power of Silence" is a 2-000 feet photo-play. Thomas Lowry, a wealthy .ranch-owner, makes his will in favour of his adopted daughter, Jane. "The Silent One," a shepherd of powerful personality, loves Jane, and Lowry agrees to the match. Robert Sinclair, a nepiiew of the old man, comesfrom the East, and falls in love with the girl, and "The Silent One" looks on without wordisi. The Easterner, with his polished manners, fascinates the girl, and he telle of the wonders of his country. Old Lowry dies suddenly, and Sinclair tries to gfteal the will, but is caiught an the act by "The Silent One." Sinclair then persuades Jane to go. with him, and "The Silent One" tells her if she really loves the man. to go, bait he also advises Sinclair that if harm ever comes to the girl he had better take his own life. Jane goes East with the city man, and in a few years her money is squandered; she is reduced to poverty, and dies broken hearted. Sinclair, liaving dissipated all the girl's money, returns . West to sell the sheep. 4 'The Silent One" trapes hhn, and by force of will power leads him to his cave in the cliffs. A desperate struggle takes place, which results in the death of ljoth, ending both a good and an evil career. * A Romance of Early Rome" is another big photo-play by the Cines Company. It is 2000 feet in length, and embraces a romance in the early and stirring times of Rome. "The Gun Smugglers" is a rather exciting drama by the Kalem Company. "Into the Genuine" is a Selig production, founded on the inconsistency of our socalled modem society. "Topical' Budget" will supply the latest events in animation. Other fine subjects are "Hogan v. Schmidt," "Snake Catching in Queensland," 'The Water Waggon," and "The Pink Corset." There will be a big matinee at 2.3Q to-day. t TOWN HALL PICTURES.
BENEFIT ENTERTAINMENT. The benefit entertainment given last evening by the Masterton Picture and Entertainment Company in aid of the widow and family of the Hate Mr R, J. Ewingtan, who met with a fatal shooting accident a short time back, was largely attended last evening, despite th-o miserable weather. During the first part of t'he programme a series of pictures were shown by the Picture Company, and the remainder of itho programme consisted of vocal items and dances. -Mr G. R. Sykes. M.P., was present, and . delivered a short address during the evening. Songs were rendered by Messrs Kingston, • Hall, Parker, O'Connor, White, Hunn, Thompson, and Young;; Mrs A. B. Wood, and a recitation by Miss McCarthy. Several Highland dances by juveniles were very popular with the audience. The Masterton Pipe Band rendered a selection which was much appreciated. As the rcvsult of last night's entertainment, a substantial sum should be raked for the benefit of the famih*.
A grand change of programme of picturas will be submitted at the Town Hall to-night, when a beauti-fully-coloured Pathe drama entitled "Bed Fox, the Poacher," will he presented. The picture ends in a thrilling and tragio manner, when Bed Fox meets his end at the hands of the police. "The Vandal Leopard" is another picture that should prove interesting, and several comedies by the Edison Company are sure to he well received. Tho -usual matinee will be held this aiternoon. when a special matinee programme will be presented and will include pictures of great educational value to the children.
