MR GEORGE LAURENSON.
The defeat of Mr George Laurenson, M.P., for the Mayoralty of Lytteltou, a position which he has held for a good many yeans, is one of those little straws that show how the wind blows. Mr Laurenson, as member for Lyttelton, has been one of the most ardent supporters of the discredited Liberal Party. While the latter were in power, he could do pretty well as he pleased with the Lyttelton electors. But since the party of patronage has gone under,
the electors fee] themselves free to exorcise, their independent judgment in local as well as general political matters. Mr Laurenson's defeat for the Mayoralty of Lyttelton by a substantial majority ib regarded as a sure indication that he will have the utmost difficulty in retaining his Beat at the next general election.
