.asterton LADIES AND GENTLEMEN— We have pleasure in informing you that, at the request of a large number of Burgesses, we have decided to offe rourselves as your repre..oiitatives on the Borough Council. Our views on the major Questions affecting the Borough so nearly approximate, that we make a joint appeal for your, support. Recognising that the prosperity of the town depends largely upon the , development of the rural territory, wa pledge ourselves to use our utmost endeavours to induce the Government to immediately and actively prosecute closer settlement in the district. We would also- urge the Government to acquire as speedily as possible an area of land in proximity, to the town, where workers might be accommodated in suitable h6mes. _ i As the water supply of the ttown requires immediate attention and as the drainage system must obviously be extended in the near future, we should, if returned, endeavour to formulate a scheme, with the assistance of the Enouineer and our fellow Councillors, which would ensure an efficient service to the town with a minimum of expenditure. We would cordially support, and assist practically as far as funds would permit, the Beautifying Society in its efforts to make the town attractive. .• We recognise the valuable asset our Public Park is to the town, and should'set ourselves 1 the task of further improving it, as- funds permit. ' 'ln our opinion, the time has arrived when an effort should be made to amalgamate Lansdowne with the Borough, and thus form a "Greater Masterton." If returned, we should advocate approaching Lansdowne residents on the subject. t , There are many streets in the outlying portions of the town that require attention, and we promise to use every effort to place and maintain them in a decent state of repair. So far as the Municipal Buildings are concerned, we should support any scheme that would make for improvement, but would consult the ratepayers before any considerable expenditure is made in this direction. The Library and' Public Beading Room are in urgent need of improvement, and we should endeavour to make them up-to-date and a,\n, tractive. > ; . - The lighting of the streets might also, we think, be improved without encroaching unduly upon: the revenue. We are strongly against exDerim°nting with the town in the' direction of altering the weekly half-holiday to any day other than that universally adopted in the District. Finally, Ladies amd Gentlemen, should you do us the honour of returning tts to the Council, we shall make "Progress" onr mottoy but shall have full retrard for the interests of the ratepayers.—Thanking you in anticipation. We remain,
