Y.MjC.A. USUAL TEA AND SERVICE. TOMORROW AT 5 p.m. Speaker—Rev Davies. ALL MEN WELCOME. (Members or Non-Membem) BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN We take this, opportunity of retunning you our sincere thanks for the confidence you have reposed in us in the in. representing you in your Municipal matters, and" trust the policy we have adopted of always voting for what we have considered to be m the best interests of the Borough as a whole, will warrant you in returning us again as your Heprosentatvies. We venture to draw your attention to some of the Measures in which we have taken a prominent part. We .have, as members of the Masw terton Closer Settlement League, assisted, in securing the purchase by the Government of two properties ii,ear Mastertfon for small farms settlement, and have secured the promise "of the Government to purchase land in Masterton for workmen's homes. Recognising! the necessity for a better town water supply, we have, as Councillors, assisted in forwarding this work, plans for which are now in the hands of the Borough Engineer. We have been active workers on the Town Beautifying Committee, and a.re strongly in favour of extending that work. We have had a large share in bringing the Public Park up to its present attractive state, and favour further progress in this direction.
The Council has endeavoured on' several occasions to induce Lans-' down© ■-'to-join the Borough, believing that amalgamation would be to the, benefit of both, their interests being' identical in every way. | If returned as.Councillors, we shall in the future, as in the past, see, to it that the outlying streets of the' Borough are properly cared for, and j as far as money -goes all parts of the ! Borough shall have a square deal. | In regard to Municipal Offices, Reading Boom and Library, the Council! has had draft plans prepared, and | these will be in .due -course submit-! ted to the Burgesses when the money j market is more favourable. i *The street lighting also is receiving' attention, the .sum. of £2OO having j been placed on last year's estimates for automatic street lighting. These; should be installed as soon as the ■ necessary connections are made. The Half-holiday Question came before the Council on January 18th ] last, and Crs. Pragnell, Elliott, Tem- I pie and Ewington and the Mayor ] voted to retain Thursday. Four j oth?r Councillors voted against Thuivs-1 dav and in favour of Saturday. On I the vote of the Mayor Thursday was | retained. We are not in favour of the present day being altered in Masterton, unless by vote of the people. The Government flight toi decide the day for the whole Colony.) In our opinion, the appointment of the Council as a Committee of the] whole is a mistake. Sectional Committees get a better grip of details, | and the importance of such undertakings as Gas and Water Supply, Park Improvement, and Public Works it is almost essential the work should be fully considered by small Committees in the interests of .economy and efficiency, and afterwards submitted to tlie whole Council. The financial position of the 'Borough Council is in a very satisfactory condition. For th? past two years we have lived within our means, and have a balance to credit on the General Account ow this year's operations of £179. The overdraft on the 31st March was £2,071, being over £l,lOO less than last year. The lowest for many years. Owing to the increased liabilities of the General Account, due to requirements under the Hospital and Chantable Aid, Fire Maintenance, Etc. tiom and Street Maintenance, Etc, it is essential that the affairs of the Borough .should be in the hands of experienced business men, whose interests are identical with that of the ratepayers, whom they represent. The* Polling Day is on Wednesday, 30th instant, and we trust every Elector will recognise his or her responsibility and record their vote.—Yours Faithfully, F. W. TEMPLE J. O. EWLVGTON J. P.
