Mr McKenzie has done splendid service for New Zealand in his official capacity since he has been at Home, and the more accurate knowledge of the great possibilities jof this little country which he lias lielped to sup ply cannot fail to promote an influx of the right class of settler, and to give an impetus to the development of New Zealand's export trades, at Home.
Conservative legislation, by whatever party it is introduced, "really means making the Jaw correspond | with the, common 'sense of all except those clash's possessed of an unevenly balanced mind. The most truly conservative legislation of recent times was that which gave trades-un< ions a legalised standing and the right to combine to secure increased wages and conditions of labour that are more favourable to their members.—Manawatu Standard.
Unless there is radical reorganisation to alter the whole scheme of administration of hospital and charitable aid affairs, we should prefer the .present, honorary system. The citizens are entitled to look for competent volunteers among men who have firmly established themselves by the community's goodwill, and are in a position to afford the time and energy for" enthusiastic public Service.—Evening Post.
How sensitive capital is has been shown by the recent war in the Balkans which caused an immediate increase in the price of money, and now that the war has practically ended the discount rate has at once dropped. No doubt very shortly money will again be fairly cheap and available for commercial and industrial enterprises,—Rangitikei Advocate.
