THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
Some of the retiring members of the Masterton Borough Council appear to think that the application for an injunction against the taking erf a poll on the half-holiday question, on the ground that the petition! does not eontain the required number of names, is a "piece of bluff." It may suit these members to take this view of the matter; but, in reality, those who have token action have done their best to save the Borough from unnecessary expense. The Borough Council is taking upon itself a, very grave responsibility in allowing a poll to proceed that may ultimately be declared invalid. However, as the Council has not thought fit to make inquiry from its solicitor, to ascertain if everything is in order, the poll, will have to be taken. If the poll should subsequently be declared void/ the responsibility will rest with the retiring Borough Council. Jn the meantime, those who are opposed to a charge in the day of closing should leave no stone unturned to show that public opinion is not ripe for ■such a revolutionary step.
