SPORTING NOTES.

(By "Also Started.") FIXTURES. April 23, 24.—South Canterbury J.C. April 24 and 2,3.—Masterton R.C. Autumn. April 30, May I.—Marlborough R.C. May 14, 15.—Egmont R.C. May 22, 24.—Wanganui J.C. May 8 and 9.—Ash burton County R.C. Autumn. May 14 and .14.—Emnont R.C. Winter May 22 and 24 Wanganui J. C. Winter. June 3 and 4.—Dur.erin J.C. Winter. Although a. number of horses, -which have of late -been much before the public eye, notably Expect and Passadena, failed to pay up for the Masterton meeting, the acceptances arc such ais to practically assure a iMiecejs*"ful meeting. The Waipipi Cup is the most disappointing race, and we would have liked to have seen such horses as Undecided ai'td Byron competing. It now certainly looks as. l if Sir Knox will have no great difficulty ■in passing the post first. If such should prove to be tli? case, the win would be a very popular one. A great many of the visiting horses will not arrive at Opaki until this afternoon, and some interesting work should be witnessed to-morrow morning. A fair number were out for fast work at Opaki yesterday. Sir Knox, carrying a welter weight, had the worst of a spin ov?r a mile with Montreal. . The, latter is galloping very freely. Otter went with the pair over the first half mile. Top Note and Glenfern finished together over severn furlongs. The latter is very well, and should figure prominently- at this week's meeting. Alecto, who still isjhows signs of lamvness, was sent four furlongs, which she accomplished nicely. Boronia galloped six furlongs by herself, and went freely. Ascalon was sent a strong «even furlongs. Useful work was allotted to Manitau, Conziska, Piormont and Grandee and several others. J I Destiny, the half brother to Sir Knox, one of T. Higgins's team, struck himself a day or two ago, and ha.s had to be thrown out of work. 1 W. Garrett has sent Tyrannic, back ■to his oWiner's place on account of there- being no schooling fences at Opaki. Tyrannic gave a good display of jumping at Pa.hiatua. Sir Solo is on the easy list at present, and may not be taken up for some time. J. Conquest,' the Auckland lightweight, has been engaged to ride Sir Knox at the Masterton meeting. Leapuki has been heavily supported to win the Flying Handicap at Opaki.:
