NEWSPAPERS AND "THE TOTE."
Parliament, in its wisdom, or in its excessive virtue, determined a few years back that the newspapers of the Dominion should not publish totalisator dividends. Private individuals may publish them broadcast. The telegraph lines may be used, to disseminate the information. But the newspapers, under the pains and penalties of the law, must refrain from indicating what is the dividend on this or that horse at a.registered totalisator meeting. If the intention of the Legislature, in curtailing the privileges of the press, was to minimise totalisator gambling, then the experiment has proved a dismal failure, for the "tote" takings have enormously increased since the restrictive legislation was passed. The time has arrived when the newspapers should combine to demand the removal of the restrictions that have been placed upon them by a pandering Legislature. No useful purpose can be served by withholding information which is of interest to a considerable section of the reading public. ,
