THE LATE MR BROAD.
DETAIL'S OF THE ACCIDENT. The Rangitikoi Advocate, in its report of the accident by which Mr E. , W. Broad, formerly of Ma-sterton, lost his life, sayy:— Mr J. B. Barrington, who was the first person- at the scene of the accident, stated thai lie heard the train whistle in the cutting, which is about 200 yards from the crossing, and then heard the collision between the train and Mr Broad's motor cycle. He was duinfounded for a moment, and -seeing Mr Broad attempt to rise he was quickly on the >spot, ;rad assisted the sufferer. From appearances he is of the opinion that -the wheel of the engine passed over the fleshy part of tlie thigh, and this is borne out by the marks on the trough's leg and blood on the rails. After the wheels passed over his leg he rolled on to the grass on the side. The cycle was carried about half a chain, and thrown on the side of the line, and was evidently caught at the back of the seat. Mr Broad's first thought way for his wife and he asked Mr Barrington ' 'To be careful how he told Mrs Broad," and then added: "I don't know how I did not hear the train whistle, or see it coming." Mx Barrington hailed a passing coach, and promptly had the sufferer conveyed to Dt Scott's residence. Mr Broad never lost consciousness, and bore his injuries with great fortitude. .. This makes the third accident at railway crossings in Marton within ten months, Mr Barrington'e. little boy being killed at this same crossing ten months ago, while at another crossing Messrs J. McChesnev andi T. H. James nearly lost their lives.
