THE SCHOOL EXCURSION

TO THE BATTLESHIP. , AN EritßA TRAIN AiBRANGED. As a result of his visit to Welling- ' ton, Mr G. R. S.ykes, M.P., has induced the Railway Department to run ' an extra special excursion train from Masterton to Wellington on Monday 1 :oxt. All school excursions will now convey children and their parents, the children travelling; free and the : parents paying the usual excursion fares. The Masterton train will leave at 6.30, and the Bush and Lansdowne train at 8.46 a.m. Mr Sykes received the following wire yesterday morning: ' "In consequence of the battleship being closed to visitors on the twenty-second and twenty-third April, arrangements will have to be re-cast. Will you wire to-mor-row what can be done to meet tho position.—T. ROXAYNE." Late in the afternoon, Mr Sykes received the following telegram : "Visit of school children to battleship—ln consequence of ship being closed to the public on ,22nd and 23rd, it will be necessary for the ad- - ditional -special promised you to ■ l?ave Masterton at 6.30 a.m. oai2lst inst., arriving Wellington at 11 o'clock, and leave on return journey at.3.2-5 p.m., reaching Masterton at about 8 p.m. This is the only arrangement that can be made under the circumstances. The train conveying Hukanui and Lansdowne schools will leave Masterton at 8.45 a.m., and .return from Wellington at 5.23 p.m., on 21st inst. Lansdowne school must travel by this train both ways, and cannot be conveyed on the Masterton special. T. RONA.YNE." The stationm aster at Masterton re- ■ ceived the following wire yesterday afternoon:— "Visit of battleship.—The instructions limiting the age of school \ children to whom free carriage would ' apply to Standards IV., V., VI. and Vn., and those in Standard 111. I over 11 years of age, are cancelled. The Education Department will pay the fares of all school children tra- ; veiling to visit the battleship." ( Mr Smith, stationmaster at Masterton, informed an Age reporter yesterday that 3t is expected that all Lansi> downe parents will travel with the » Lansdowne children by the 8.45 a.m. train. The stationmaster has arrang- , ed for the booking office at the Masterton station to be open between ■ 6.30 and 8 p.m. on Saturday next for the issue of ordinary excursion tickets.
