THE THREE R's.
Are the oliildi-au attending the elementary schools in "New Zealand receiving adequate instruction in the three R*s —the groundwork of all commercial education ? This is a question that is being asked by parents, as well; »sl by business men in the community. There is reason to fear that reading, writing and arithmetic are not so successfully taught to-day as they were twenty or thirty .veals ago. This is not the /fault of the teachers. It is the fault of a system that has crowded into the syllabus a. lot of educational superfluities. The three 11'« do not receive
blio attention to-day that they desnrve. The teacher* know it. The Education Boards kncrw it. The business man knows it. One of these ({ays tiro syllabus will be put into the melting-pot. and then we shall get better results.
