The Rev. T. Trestrail, ono time of Eketahuna, has been' appointed Methodist minister at Cambridge. Three candidates are offering themselves for the Mayoralty of Pahiatuai Messrs D. Crewe, J. Osborne-Lilly, and J. D. Wilson. J * Mr Leonard Houlbrooke, of Waterfalls, has announced his'intention-of becoming a candidate for the vacantt seat on the Masterton County Coun* cil. Mr K. J. McLennan, who has beeie on a-fcrip to the Old Country for the benefit of his health, is expected to return to Pahiatua during the present week. Mr Charles E. The Bruce Herald records the death' at Milton of Mr George Lindsay, in. his BSth year. He was the sole survivor of the origanal band of pioneers 'who settled on the Tokomairiro Plaint in the early 'fifties. The late MiLindsay was born in Glasgow in 1826 and arrived at Port Chalmers in the* Royal Albert in 1854. He settled on the eastern end of the Tokomairiro Plain, where the family have lived since. The death took place at Mcleod, Alberta, on March sth, of Sergt. John Ryan, one of the best-known veterans of the district, and a battle-scarred warrior of- 1 the British Army; Deceased, who- wa-s 86 years of age, had a- stirring life. He was a member of the famous 60th Rifles which served with Havelock through the Indian Mutiny, and he was in half a dozen o£ the fiercest engagements. He was in the force which marched t-> the relief of Delhi. For liis services in this memorable campaign, Mr Ryan received several medals and c.la.sps. Returning to England, lie afterwards enlisted witU the 40th Regiment, and again saw active secvice, going out to New Zealand tofight the Maoris.
