DISTRICT NEWS.
Our Own Correspondent. MAURICEVILLE WEST. At 7.12 on Saturday night, a violent earthquake occurred here. It commenced with a north to south motion, and ended with heavy swaying from east to west. No- serious damage is reported, although articles of furniture ,crockery, etc., rattled to an alarming extent. Rabbit-poisoning operations have been commenced in and around this district, but the wet state of the weather will not assist the farmer with his good intentions. It is to be hoped that a good number of householders will' attend the public meeting in the school 6n the 28th ,inst. It is more satisfactory for all parties if the vote is exercised in making up the school committee for the ensuing year. Interest in this important matter in the past has been rather dull. Two more light shocks of earthquake were experienced about 3.5 p.m. on Sunday.
