HOCKEY.
YESTERDAY'S GAMES. Tlu' hockey season, as far ;u Mastortun teanis are concerned. was opened at La.n-sdowne yesterday. The weather wa-M ideal, and though the ground was somewhat rough, the, form displayed was-good for the beginning of tlu season. 'I here were a fair number of onlookers. The chief match down IVr decision was a friendly game between I'. ami T. and St. Matthew's. Both teamsshowed fair form, although as might be expected, there woiv a number of infringements. The play at stages was fast and interesting. The St. Matthew's boys played with considerable dash and 'deserved th.ii" win. although the scores might have been closer had the l\ and T. forwards been less anxious. The final scores were: St. Matthew's ."5. I\ and T. 1. For the former. Hornblow, Hatch and C>b each notched a goal, while Hay scored for the losers. 'I he match showed that the players are in satinfactory form. ai:d may be expected to give some interesting displays during the coming season. 'the Excelsior l am played a scratch match, the juniors and seniors making up two elevens. Jhe game was remarkable for the amount of scoring done, the scores being something like 10 goals- to 0 in favour of the "B" team. Ex(vlsio r give promise of being able to place a very strong team in. the field this season, and as far as one could judge by yesterday's play the champions-hip should this year come to Masterton, as- the three "local teams look being stronger than usual.
