SPORTS MEETING AT CARTERTON. The iinewly-formed Carterton branch ' of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society ■ hid their initial sports gathering on | the Carterton Showgrounds yesterday, . there being a splendid attendance of , the public. Meltfflan was the most successful ] juvenile Highland dancer winning both , the Fling and Reel-O'-Tulloch. ,The ; amateur running events produced big ; aeids, and the Masterton men prac- ; tically swept the board. R. McKen- i zie, with four wins and one second, ; won the gold medal presented by Mr . H. Dooly .and was followed by J. Mc- ; Kain, with two wins and one second. < . The item of the afternoon was the « Highlanders' race (in costume), which produced a big field, and was won, all . out, bv the drum-major, Mr H. Long. . No official time was taken but it is . confidently expected that the standard was lowered. The Caledonian , Pipe Band held a procession through, , both the Ma*,terton and Carterton , main streets, and was a great attraction on tlie grounds.
