HARDWOOD TIMBERS.
PROPOSED PURCHASE BY GOVERNMENT. The Masterton County Council has received the following circular letter fi'oim, the Under Secretary of Public Works: —"The, Government has on several occasions recently been urged to consider the question of purchasing, for supply to local governing bodies, Australian hardwood piles and timber suitable for use in the construction of bridges, wharves and other , structures. The Minister of Public Works is willing to assist in the direction suggested, provided he is satisfied that there is a general feeling in the part of local bodies in favour of the service being undertaken by the Government. He instructs me, therefore, to inquire whether your Council would purchase hardwood timber s required from time to time from stocks held by the Government, at prices that would represent only a small margin on the actual cost to the Department. The advantage would be prompt delivery and the assurance that tile timber has been inspected and passed by Government in specters in Australia. Pur chasers would, of course, be expected to take delivery of timber at the Government Repots, which would be established at Auckland, Wellington, Christoburch and Dunedin, and all charges for handling and freight between the depot and the point of final delivery, would-be borne by the local authority purchasing the timber. If your Council would ibe willing to purcha.se from the Government, will you kindly furnish a- brief schedule of the lengths and sizes most likely to be required, as a. guide, in Compiling the order for stock in the event of the Department receiving sufficient encouragement to warrant its erri-barking in the business oh the lines indicated."
