BITTKII CONTROVERSY PENDING. A RUSH TO WASHINGTON. WASHINGTON, April 7. , Developments in connection with the tariff indicate that a bitter controversy is pending. Representatives of business interests are crowding to Washington to lay their case before the Senate. Jl'hey claim that a 20 per cent, reduction in wages throughout the country is inevitable-if. the suggested programme is carried out. Dr Wilson has decided to submit a single Bill containing the whole revision scheme, and this, despite strong opposition on the part of Democratic Senators, who are favouring schedule by schedule, revision. MEASURE INTRODUCED. RELIEVING THE COST OF LIVING. WASHINGTON, April 7. The tariff measure has been introduced in Congress. Raw wool, meats, flour, boots and shoes, coal, and timber, are to be free; on, combed wool and tops a duty of 15"per cent.; on sugar 25 per cent., and free after tliree years; on fruit- 15 per cent.; on live stock 10 per cent. The reductions will generally relieve the cost of living. The' raw flax and hemp duties will he" reduced by 50 per cent.
