IMMIGRATION QUESTION.
We are ghid that the Prime Minister has taken prompt -measures to cmtradict 'the statement, which >iis being cit'cui'.ated broadca«st by the Opposition press, to the effect that tnf> Government proposes' introducing 25,000 ihimigrants annually. Such a policy, at tli.e present juncture, would ho suicidal. The first duty of the Government is to fmd remunerative employment for those already within our shores, and to assist in procuring such labour as is urgently required for the development of our resources. Land must'be thrown open for close cultivation on advantageous terms, and when this is dene, and a ptf.icy of fragality is substituted for one of recklessness, the nopulation question will speedily right itself. The oft-rene-itfvl nI the Government desires to flood the countrv with labour, in order to force down wages, is the malicious creation of designing and disappointed politicians. It ~]w no foundation in fart.
