A CALEDONIAN GATHERING.

FAREWELL TO MR J. HESSEY. On Thursday evening a very pleasant function took place in the Club Hotel,- when a large number of members'of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society met to wish bon voyage to Mr J. -Hessey, a prominent member of the Society, and who leaves shortly on-*a visit to Europe, Ma- J. B, McKemte, -Presidehi, presided, and femongst thxMd present ivere Messrs; A- % A. Mutrie, B. ft, Rayner, G. and H. Laing, tap-T-. S. Arcuts (Chairman of the Car- ~ terton branch), Gt. Heron, R. Mckenate, T. G. Hoar and W. Gillespie, (Secretary of the Society.) The Chairman in proposing the health of the guest of the evening, referred in Eulogistic terms to the splendid work' done by Mr Hessey, for the Wairarapa, by promoting successfully many gold mining ventures, which brought io Master-ton in particular much wealth. He was sure that all the members of the Caledonian Society ■ "would join with him in wishing Mr and Mrs Hessey a very pleasant voyage and a safe return to Masterton. Mr McKenzio then presented Mr Hessey with a handsome travelling rug, on behalf of the Society, and with «, framed photo, on behalf of the Petone division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, which was last year slic •eessful in, winning the Shield presort<ed by Mr Hessey. Mr Hessey in responding referred to the happy connection' he had. had with the Caledonian Society, which he hoped to see grow into the most prosperous and influential Society in the Dominion. During the evening, an opportune ity was taken to give a welcome to Messrs. G. and H. Laing, two prominent Caledonians, who have 'just returned from a visit to their native land, and a tour of the world. Mr A. W. Hogg gave a stirring welcome to the returned Caledonians, his eulogistic remarks being received with applause. Ailotherp re.sentation was also -made the recipient this time being Mr N. Pearson, of the Pipe Band, the presentation, a gold medal, being made hv Mr T. G. Hoar.-and awarded for the piper whose uniform was b:-st 'kept. During the evening numerous toasts were honoured, and songs and recitations were Tendered by Messrs. 0. Wilson, H. Hall, S. Kingston and W. Dickson. The catering wa*> in the capable bands of Mr H. Crass, which is sufficient guarantee that nothing was lacking. "Auld Lang Syne." sang with true Scotch vigour, terminated a most enjoyable gathering.
