At a meeting of the Pongaroa Medical Guarantee Committee, hold at Pongaroa last Saturday, it was decided to accept the application of l)r Jennings, of Sydney, for the position ol doctor to the Committee. The duti.s will commence on iMay Bth. l)r a-nd M'r.s Jennings will arrive early in May, and take up their residence; in Pongaroa. A. very old resident of Woodville in the person, of Mrs Peebles, mother of Mrs A. Rosenberg, of Hastings, passed away yesterday morning. Deceased, who was 70 years of -iige, had resided at Woodville for the last £•■> years, previous to which she lived at "Waipawa and Kaikoura. Councillor Charles Cross takes his seat for a first time at the meeting of t.he Masterton County Council to-day. The death occiixred at Port Molyneux last week of Mr George Cunningham, who had been a resident that district for the past six years. The deceased, who was seventy-four years of age, leaves a family of grown-up sons and daughters. One of his sons is Mr William Cunuingliam, of the Wairarapa, and one of his daughters Mrs Collins, of this district. The Rev. H. Watson, vicar of St. Matthew's, Masterton, commenced a series of mission services in Wellington yesterday.
The wedding of Miss Ivy Rowe, oldest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. J. Rowe, of Featherston, to Mr .James W. Holland, of the Wellington telegraph office, and eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. Holland, of Tim-am, took place at St. John's Church, Featherston, on Saturday. The Rev. A. T. B. Page performed the ceremony. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Myrtle Rowe, and the best man was Mr Claude Rowe, a. brother of the bride. Mr and Mrs Holland left for Wellington by the afternoon train. Mr George Pearson, bookseller and fancy goods dealer, of Timaru, died suddenly yesterday at the age of 74. In the early days deceased was engaged in the coasting trade. A Marlborough pioneer, Mrs James Sinclair, of the old Renwick road, Blenheim, died last week at the age of 82 years. With her first husband, •Mr Robert Thomson, she came out from Glasgow in 1855, and settled in the Wairau. Mr Thomson died in the early 'seventies, .and later she married 'Mr James Sinclair, whose death occurred a short time before Eer own.
Mr P. R. Kent, of Pongaroa, has T>een appointed bandmaster of the Pongaroa Brass Band. A cablegram from Rome states that His Holiness the Pope is suffering from a slight attack of influenza. At a m-eeting <?f the directors of the Masterton Dairy Company on Saturday, the resignation of Mr W. R. Boyd as a member of the directorate was accepted with regret. It was decided at the monthly meeting of the directors of the Masterton Hairy Company on Sanrday to forward to Mr J. C. F.wi'igtc/n a letter of condolence in the tragic death of his brother, Mr R. J. Ewington. The Sydney Daily Telegraph, states suithoritatively that after the present Parliament Mr J. McGowen will not only relinquish the Premiership, but will retire altogether from a?i active political life.
