THE AMERICA CUP.
Sir Thomas Lipton lias displayed a good de.nl of coin-age ill issuing a challenge for the America Cup. The conditions under which the contest is decided are such tliab it is practically impossible !to wrest tlie .Cup from America. Tho challenger has to submit the plans of his yacht to the defenders ten months before the race, ho must construct his vessel according to those plans, and he must &ail the craft across the Atlantic, ihe defenders, on the other hand, are able to build as many us tliev like, and to select the best, and it is not necessary for them to construct a. yacht that'will stand the test of an Atlantic gale. In the circumstances. Sir Thomas Lipton will be meeting eho defenders on conditions that are all in tho latter's favour. If he is ■ successful under -such conditions, he will have put up an immense performance. It oan hardly be said that the rides under which the race is sailed have been framed- by a body of sportsmen.
