NATIONAL PROVIDENT FUND
Ono ol' the creations of tho Ward Administration was the National Provident Fund. This Fund has now Seen two years in existence, and it would be interesting to know just how it stands. How many have taken advantage of the. facilities it offers for "voluntary thrift on the basis of mutual contributions by tho State and the individual?" What proportion lias been tho cost of the Department to tho income received? AYhere does the humanitarian part of the scheme come in? What is there about i.he Fund that causes the public, to «hy at it? The Official Year-Book states that "the voluntary enrolments go to show that the scheme has inherent powers of attracting contributors.'When wo know w,h.at tho voluntary enrolments are, wo sliall bo in a better position to judge for ourselves on this point. Tn tlie meantime, „ho Year-Book gives no information on the subject. This, in itself, is very significant. We are firmly convinced that the scheme is so crude, unworkable and lop-sided, that the intelligent public will 'have nothing to do with it.
