CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION.
PROGRESS OF ITS WORK. (By Telegraph. — Fress Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Jn order to carry out, as tar as practicable, their decision to see every officer in the public service before issuing their first classification, the Commissioners proceed to the South Island to-night. It is officially announced that since the Commissioners assumed office at the beginning of the year, the work undertaken hasbeen greater than was anticipated. The inspection of departments, preparation of regulations under the Act, and preparation of the first draft of classification, have proceeded concurrently. The inspection of the ■departments by the Commissioners themselves will occupy a greater portion of the present year; but in order to bring the inspection into a forward state, a committee of expert record clerks was set up to 'report on the systems of record in the Government departments, with the object of adopting the best system for all branches of the service. The report of the committee is now under consideration. A committee of expert accountants from the public service is now making inquiries with the object of ascertaining whether duplication or overlapping exists. This committee is expected to report about the middle of April. An expert statistician is also examining the statistical work of the departments, with the object of ascertaining where- improvements can bo .made. The classification should bo roadv about the first of Juno.
