DETAILS OF THE CALAMITY. LIEUT. NINXIS FALLS INTO A CREVASSE. DR. MERTZ DIES FROM MALNUTRITION.

(Received Last Night, 11.15 o'clock"SYDNEY, March -5. Professor David to-day received the following wireless message from Dr. Mawson: — "The Aurora arrived on January 12th. All sledge parties returned to the hut' by . January 17th, excepting my party—Lieut. Ninnis, Dr. Merte and myself. On December 4th, whilst exploring a new coast-line, 300 miles south-east of the winter quarters, Lieut. Ninnis, with one dog team, and almost all tho food, disappeared down an unfathomable crevasse. Dr. Merty and T, with inadequate provisions and six starving dogs, struck ant over the plateau for the hut, encountering unexpectedly bad weather, which retarded our progress. We subsisted chiefly on logs. On January 17th, Dr. Mert>. died from causes arising from malnutrition. On February 7th, T, alone., arrived at the hut, having traveled through snow and fog, and being miraculously guided by Providence through heavilv-crevassed areas. Captain Davis'had waited until it was no longer safe, and is now nroceeding to our western base. Tie left n few hours before my arrival." The balance of the mes'age covers the information cabled yesterday.
