TECHNICAL SCHOOL
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of subscribers of the Technical School waa--1 held last evening, there .being pre- > sent—Messrs W. iH, Jackson (in tho-. * chair), J. M. Cora dine,. H. J. o'Leaxy„ , E. Feist, A. W. Hogg,.. 11. Foss and > .Leslie. . i Mr Jackson, in moving, the adoption I o£ the annual report and balancei -sheivt, said it was satisfactory to not© i that there were 120 pupils receiving.free tuition. Ho also pointed out that the lagest classes were tliosa in. which utility instruction was- given. Hi> regretted that the art class*** were not more freely patronisfrfl, but it was plain that little interest- wasbeing taken in the art classes.- in. dealing with the balance-sheet,. Mr Jackson said it spoke for itself, antL •showed the finances to be in a sound* condition. He was sorry to see sofew present that evening, but lift' thought this was due to a misconception of tho regulations, many apparently 'holding the opinion that unless they paid a subscription this year thoy were not eligible to vote. ; Mr C. E. Daniell, in seconding tlu*' adoption of the report, said lie had.' little to add to what was stated rathe report. He, however, could nog but feel disappointed at the lack of interest taken fay the parentis, as indicated by their non-appearance that evening. He thought the people* should-show a more live interest in an. institution of such value to the community, •Mr Coradine, in supporting the rer* port, said lie would like to see the old method of suibscriptiou lists instituted again., as in this way he was sure that added interest in the work . of the institution would result. Mr Hogg said that it should, be known that the finances of the schooL were in a better condition than was ' indicated by the balance-sheet. This was due to certain moneys not being received from the Department in time, to "be shown in the balance-sheet. This was o.f course no fault of the managers, who were to be congratulated on the very economic, manner in. which they administered the limited/ funds at their disposal. He would liketo see more funds available for t:.& institution, so that the teachers, wlio were sacrificing a good deal in f,h& interests of education, should be properly compensated. Referring to voting qualifications, Mr Hogg said - that he would like to see every one havo a vote, at least every one who had a. vote on the Trust Lands Trust. This, he considered, would have the effect of increasing the interest in technical education. H© agreed with Mr Coradine that the old subscription lists, should be looked up, and lie was" surer that all those who subscribed in thspast would be pleased to do so again- , The report and balance-sheet were then unanimously adopted ELECTION OF .MANAGERS. The following managers were then, re-elected for the ensuing year: Messrs W. H. Jackson., H. J. O'Leary, J. M. Coradine, C. E. Daniell and E. Feist. Mr Hogg, in moving a vote of thanks to the managers, referred eu-logistic-ally to the splendid work doneiby them in the past. He was burc that the interests of the Technical School were placed in very good handsby the re-election of last year's board, of- managers. Mr Leslie seconded the motion, which wo® carried unanimously. MEETING OF MANAGERS. The board of managers met after, the ar. nual meeting, when Mr W.. IL Jackson was unanimously xe-elected to the .position of chairman for tho ensuing year. It was decided' that the chairman be deputed to receive moneys on behalf of the board. In dealing with the appointment/of a secretary and treasurer, Mr Coradine said he ■would like to see a secretary appointed who would also act ia the capacity of director of the institution. He thought thlat a movements in this direction would materially assist the . school. He thought them would (be no very great difficulty ia raising the income of the institution, to meet the extra expenditure entailed in providing a suitable salary for a oapalble man to fill the position. Messrs Jackson, Daniell and O'Leary endorsed the opinion express, ed by Mr Coradine. On the .motion of Mr Feist, it was decided to appoint Messrs Jackson, Coradine and Dahiell a committee to go into the matter of appointing ft secretary, on the lines indicated byMr Coradine, and that applications he> callM for the same. It" was decided to ca"! for applications for vacancies on the. teaching staff. ■ . . It was decided to authorise the. chairman to employ any necessaryclerical assistance.
