It is a most surprising thing to ns that the decision of the 'Government to withdraw the grant for free schoolhooks from the Education Boards has not been met with a storm of resentment from the School Com/n'fctecs throughout the Dominion. Apparently these bodies have not fullv realised what the withdrawal of the concession means to the poorer people in the community. It mea'ris for the parent who lias four or five children attending the school a tax of probably a shilling per week. When we tem ember that it is usually the. man with limited means wljo provides the large family, it, will at once b e seen that the tax becomes a burden upon those least able to bear it. We maintain that if our system of education is to lie (roe and compulsory, the cost of all s'.'hoo! requisites should come out of the consolidated fund. We cannot help thinking that the Government lias pursued a retrograde step in withdrawing the concession. But we cannot hold the Education Boards and School Committees altogether blameless for permitting the withdrawal without a vigorous protest. j
