The next Wellington wool sales are to be held 011 March. Ith. A Maori named Reihana, aged 70, was knocked down by a motor car on the road to Taupo. He died. A man was arrested in Masterton yesterday by Detective Andrews 011 a charge of failing to provide for his illegitimate child at Nelson. He will be remanded to the southern township. The Hereford bullock, the property of Mr G-. F. Moore, of Kai Ju i, which was purchased by Mr F. Fairey, of Nelson, at the Solway fat stock fair yesterday, will be shipped to Sydney, to compete at the Royal Show. It 'is a remarkably line specimen of the breed. An Auckland telegram states that ex-Detective Miller returned to R.oto Roa Island voluntarily yesterday, awaiting the result of'the protest made to the Justice Department in regard to his conviction as an habitual inebriate. He states h© has been in touch with: the officer in charge of the island since 29th ult., when lie went to Auckland and applied for a rehearing of his case. No compulsion was necessary regarding his return to Roto Rca. When Mr D. Tv. Logan was elected president of the Masterton branch of the Sports Protection League, at the initial meeting last night, Mr' A. A. Paape, organising secretary of the League, stated that Mr "Logan was the third gentleman of that name to be elected president of the League, the others being presidents of the Gisborne and Hawera branches respectively 7.: INTEREST AWAKENED. The gate takings at Mar ton's first show, which was opened by Premier Massoy last week, were about £6O. There wore close on a hundred motor cars at Solway yesterday. This number should be added to considerably to-day. News was received in Masterton yesterday that tlio new tumbler for the Success dredge had arrived. It is expected, therefore, that work will be almost immediately resumed. The total amount of the Hospital Saturday and Sunday collections in Wellington was £407 19s 3d. With the Government subsidy, this amount will be increased to £896 14s Sd. The water on the Masterton showground gave out for a time yesterday, Tho stoppage was repaired in the afternoon, and the famished stock were relieved. The secretary of the Maf/terton A. and P. Association yesterday receive.! a telegram from Ekctahuna, stating that the tradesmen in that township had decided to close their establishments for the show to-day. Sideshows of every_ imaginable description were much in evidence at Solway yesterday, and although practically an off-day, business appeared fairly brisk. Riders in the jumping events at yesterday's show state that the jumps are much improved this year, and there is not nearly so much risa or horses coming to grief. Both of tho Wellington freezing works are now running with fairh full boards. It was reported m Masterton yesterday that some of tho butchers who had gone out had returned to work, though we were unable to confirm the report. The dust nuisance was very pronounced on the road to Solw ay yesterday. The Association would be conferring an undoubted benefit upon its patrons, if it could be arranged to have the Borough water carts lequisitioned to-day. The arrangement of having motor traffic driving hack from Solway to town via Pownall Street, woiked very well lor a time yesterday. In the evening, however, the motor hog was everywhere, making matters very uncomfortable for those driving vehicles or walking. The limb of the law, in the shape of two policemen, kept a wary eye on motorists, travelling to and from Solwav yesterday. At least on© driver was -pulled up and his name taken, apparently for exceeding the speed limit. Exhibitors at the Masterton show speak in glowing terms of the railway facilities on the present occasion. Passengers from the north complained of an unnecessary delay yesterday morning; but it is hoped that punctuality will -be observed to-day.
Record nominations have been received for the Forty Mile Bush Athletic Society's Sports, to bo held at Hainua on Wednesday next, the 26th inst. Some of the best runners from all over the North Island have nominated. The handicaps are now being prepared, and will be declared by the official handieapper, Mr H. J. White, on -Saturday, 22nd inst.
'Some amussment has been occasioned in a 'Forty-Mile Bush township over the action of a certain pedagogue. A sum of four or five pounds had been collected from local tradespeople and others, to provide the school children with prizes. The schoolmaster gravely >su.fr<rested that the money be expended in Wellington, "where toys are being sold cheap at the sales." Naturally, the tradespeople who subscribed are asking a question.
Unusual interest is being taken in the election of Councillor for the Alfredton 'Riding of the Masterton County, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Cr. Kebbell. Already two candidates are in the field, while there are rumours of a third. Messrs S. M. George and C. Cross, who are already announced, are vigorous campaigners. Mr Cross has announced his- intention of speaking at the various districts throughout the .Riding, and there is no doubt that other candidates will follow suit.
Mr William Perry, of Masterton, is about to despatch one of . his stud Lincoln ranif to Mr William Riddell, j-un., of Willamette Valley, Oregon, United States. Two or three years ago Mr Perry sent a ram to Mr Riddell, and it is satisfactory to _ find that the buver was so pleased with his purchase that he is repeating the order. In the present case, the ram is to be taken over, together with a Romnev from Mr Short's Parora-ngi flock, bv Mr D. Evans, who has be°n head shepherd for Mr H. D. Vavasour, of Marlborough, for some time.
i A Southern doctor has issued a note of warning, which is well worth , considering. Referring to the numerous cases of go-called ptomaine poii soning, the medical man in question . said that it was not improbable that some of these cases were ascribable to the eating of unpeeled apples, etc., which had been sprayed with arsenate of lead. It would, he said, be a wise precaution, for children (and adults too), to be careful in all cases to peel such fruit before eating it, and thus avoid the danger of very unpleasant effects, as arsenate of lead is a very strong poison.

To Tvuiti has carried a loan proposal of £13,000 fer water and drainage. Pahiatua. County workmen have petitioned for an increase of wages to £3 per week. Free labourers who manned the hoards at the Patea freezing works averaged 10s per day during the first few days. The death occurred at Pahnerston North last week of Miss Maud Nott, daughter of Mr T. J. Nott, at one time a resident, of Eketnhuna. Tho deceased was twenty-four years of age. An Invercargill telegram states that a motor garage at Otautau, belonging to Mr W. G. O'Connor, wast destroyed by tiro yesterday morning. Five bodies have been recovered from tho 700 ft level of the North Mount Lyell mine. They were in a wonderful state of preservation. The side shows at tho Masterton f.'how are as varied as they are bewildering. There is a circus, merry-go-round, vaudeville company, half a dozen monostroties, and goodness knows how many minor attractions, with a ban-el organ or two thrown in. Finder of a steeplechase riding whip. lost on the show grounds, is asked to leave same at this office. Three- smart gatekeepers are required at tho showgrounds this morning. Tenders are invited for the supply rf 12 cords of firewood to the Masterton public schools. A young lady is wanted for show rooms and sales in country store. A lady engaged during day, requires board with quiet family in Lansdowne. The Akitio County Council invites tenders for the delivery of .600 yards of cither burnt papa or rock from Creek Bed, for the metalling of Waikereru Road. Splendid bargains are being offered at Mr J: Carpenter's great- February boot .sale, now being held. The person who removed a bicycle from the front of Mr Wood's chcmst shop on Saturday night last, is requested to return same.
