Nine applications were received ioi the position of ranger and dog tax collector, etc. the Council j®" ■solved, on tho motion of Coumilloi Murrav, seconded by Councilloi Die kins, that Mr Geo. W. West, ol 1 ontraroa be appointed to tho position a a salary of £l5O per annum Two tendei s were received ioi Retailing the Pongaroa-Masterton from Wrights (Mangatit:) Creek Gadsby and Bartlett 1,500 c yards at 10s Set (accepted), B. Lcathwick 14s (id per c. yard. Mr W Whittaker's ofler to erect the Aerial at Aairaka Pinchfor£l4o was accepted. Mr J. Martin, Jr. of* fered to purchase the balance oi plant .required and erect the Aerial at IoUU. (Declined) , Proposed by Cr. Murray, seconded by Cr. Ellinghain and unanimously carried "That in connection with the Akitio Bridge Approach Road, plans of which have already been approved by the Council and Mr F. Armstrong, tiio Council of Akitio as previously agreed upon do now pay to Messrs. Smith and Humphries (the owners) as compensation (for land taken (approximately 5 acres) the'sum of £25 per 1 acre and also to refund to Messrs Smith and Humphries the proportion of rent of .Native Reserve secured for Public Road being a parcel of land of -about 2 acres. The Council also I agrees to form, metal and fence cn both sides of the said road and further agrees to lay water on to the piece of land lying between the road ;and river on completion of bridge.

The Masterton County Council wrote agreeing to allow the Grant of £BB-1 19s Id £ for £ Pongaroa to Masterton to be expended within the Akitio Ounty 'but adjacent "to the Masterton County Boundary. The Clerk was instructed to a;ppiy for the grant and thank the Masterton County Council ; I for their generous offer. A vote of thanks wais also passed to Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., for his prompt action in waiting on the Masterton Council on this Council's behalf. The County (Surveyor, Mr L. W. Ward reported that the plan of road past Mr Armstrong's house (Akitio) had been examined by the Chief Surveyor and returned to himl a few days ago. The Bridge approach Road Plans are awaiting for owners signatures. The Glenora Road Deviation has been approved 1 by the Survey Office. iMr Leslie W. Fletcher's application to place gates across the Waihoki Valley Road wa.s refused. I .Mr A. McLean's request that the ! grader should" open ur> Mt. Cadmus I Road (Akitio) was referred to tho Alio £28.000 loan. The interest is j stated 1 at 3| per cent. Tho Council | considers it very wrong that previous J Debentures issued to the "N.Z. State | Guarantee Advances .Department" should be cancelled by the Depart-

ment and the interest raised on a loan finally approved and quarter of the money (£7,000) of the loan, (£28,000) having been raised and .spent on a security of Id in the £ at 'the rate of 3'i pe/ cent. The Bruce County Council's resolution "That this Council is of opinion that contributions to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards should be made from the Consolidated Fund in lieu of tho present .system of making levies on Local Bodies" was supported. The /Council has expressed the opinion that tho present system in connection with the management of Hospitals and Charitable Aid Monies is absurd. The centres practically managed the whole fund, with the result that the smaller local bodies did not receive a fair proportion of representation nor expenditure, Tho Public Works Department informed the Council that they were not prepared to grant the Councils "quantities and estimates" re cost of bridge when it is taken into 'consideration that the plans are prepared free of cost. The Council were of opinion that in view of the fact that the Government made out the quantities and estimates re bridges the local bodies in the Dominion should have the'benefit of same to guide them in letting tenders. One Councillor asked was the estimates and quantities made by the Government for pigeon hole purposes only? Mr F. Robbies complaints regarding Waiohiki Valley -Road were reported as having been attended to. Tho Public Works Department telegraphed that tho balance of bridge plans (six) would be forwarded by tho Bth. February. Hpwever the plans did not arrive. On. the motion of Cr. Dickins and seconded by Cr. Murray, it was resolved that the Overseer at once complete tho work of clearing slips on tho Waioakura road so that the balance of grant monies viz. £l2O would he at once .secured. The Weber County Council's claim did not receive serious consideration. The Weber Council asked for £l5O for the cost of maintenance of tho

Dannevirke, Herbertville, Esdale, Oporae and Waione Roads. Request received. The County Treasurer tabled his monthly report showing the Akitio County Fund Overdraft at £1493 13s Bd. The Akitio County Loan (£28000) Or. £7O 10s 3d. £BOO Ten per centum. loan Cr. £517 16s lOd. Al'itio County interest Account Cr. £242 19s. The Half Years "Thirds" accrired to the 6th October last amounted to £278 8a lid.. 1 " Tho monthly wages allocations showed the following wages expenditure. —Roads Construction and Maintenance £174 2s 4d. Thirds £39 10s. Yard Account £1 7s. Sugar Loaf Grant £ll 18s 6d : Total £226 17s lOd. The main roads totalled*£l26 2s 4d. The Contractor who is obtaining metal from Akaroa Peak is to be written to and asked to push cn with his contract. The Council are anxious to complete the metalling between Pongaroa and Weber County Boundary from this pit when the present Contract Xo. 174 is completed.

It was resolved to call tenders re metalling Waikereru Road. The Government will be written to regarding the condition of the Waiowakji Road which has been handed over to the County to maintain. Wages and a counts amounting to £lBOl 14s 5d were passed for payment. Tho Council rose at 7 p.m. after sitting since 11 a.m. It is anticipated that the cost of the Karaka Aerial at Rakanui will be considerably less-than £6OO,
