DROWNING CASE
ROTORUA, Last Night. (By Telegraph.— Fress Association.) At the inquest touching the death of Solomon Newton, a Maori, who was drowned in Lake Rotoiua, on Sunday, the evidence showed that a partv 'of 15, including three .Natives, spent the day on the Lake. Hiey had with them five dozen of beer, and six bottles 1 of whisky. By the time Hamurana the- second port ol call way reached, all the liquor had'been consumed, and the party were more or less intoxicated. Tho organiser of the party admitted that ho was not sober enough to remember the details of the accident, but the others stated that Solomon was walking along the sidei ol the launch, when ho slipped and fell into the water. Evidence was given that the man in charge was under the influence of liquor shortly after landing. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
