AMATEUR ATHLETICS
EVENING EVENTS. Two events, under the auspices of tho "VVairarapa Amateur Athletic Club, were got off on the Park Oval yesterday, the distances being 75 yards and 880 yards. The racing in tho former event was very interesting, close finishes resulting in the first heat and the final. Tho first heat went to R. McKenzie, off 4yds, and the second to R. Messenger, off 2yds. In tho final Messenger got the best of the pistol, jumping off well, and won a splendid race by inches from R. McKenzie, who was running well at the finish. The half-mile event fell to J. Bradbury, who put up an exoollent performance in carving out the distance in lmin 59 3-sseo. and winning without an effort. Bradhivy never ran better that at the present time, and if all goes well meanwhile, lie should be a certainty in the halfmile championship to. be-decided at Wellington next week. There was the usual large gathering of spectators, and tho sport was greatly enpyoil. The results were as follow : 75 Yards Handicap.— First Rent: R. McKenzie (4yds) 1, A. C. Bowman (fiyds) 2. A good finish. Time, Rsoo. Second Heat: R. Messenger (2vds) 1. J. Miller (7yds) 2. Won easily/ Time 7 4-7Soc. Final: R. Messenger 1. R. .McKenzie 2, A. 0. Bowman 3. A close finish. Time, 7 3-sscc.
